The Heart of Worship…really?

While at work today, I heard the song, The Heart of Worship, come over the speakers. Here is the chorus…

I’m coming back to the heart of worship
And it’s all about You
It’s all about You, Jesus
I’m sorry, Lord, for the thing I’ve made it
When it’s all about You
It’s all about You, Jesus

Now, it is not unusual for me to hear this song, as it is on our music loop and plays quite often, nor is it unusual for me to hear dozens of other theologically shallow songs throughout the day; however, in light of the fact that I had just read this article, I thought a little more about what I was hearing.

I am not trying to pick on this singer/songwriter and I am not putting down those who hold this song dear. In fact I have personally sung this song many times at youth events back in the day and am not discrediting that worship experience. But, I am urging you to examine the songs you participate in and lift up to the Almighty. Do they match up with what the Bible says? Are they offering true adoration and praise? Are they displaying a correct view of God? Remember, you don’t have to dumb things down for our Creator; He is smart enough to handle the big words and the complicated ideas. Don’t be afraid to worship with songs that have a little meat in them…try this one on for size…

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

  1. From Gilmore Girls:

    ZACK (singing): A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. (stops singing) Dude, what’s a bulwark?

    BRIAN: What?

    ZACK: It says, “A bulwark never failing.”

    BRIAN: I think it’s a wall.

    ZACK: Then why don’t they just say that? Bulwark sounds totally gay.

    BRIAN: I don’t think you’re supposed to call a hymn gay. It’s like a sin or something.

    ZACK: Whatever, man. I’m not saying bulwark.

  2. Ahhh…Gilmore Girls. Greatness. You know, if you don’t get your DVDs soon, I may just be forced to start the whole series over again (as Jason sighs annoyingly in the background). Sooo…do you have that last season yet? 🙂
